The state of Alabama became the 22nd state of the United States of America on December 14, 1819. Montgomery is the capital and 3rd largest city of Alabama. Heart of Dixie, the cotton state and the yellowhammer state are three famous nicknames of Alabama. Dixie is an old word referring to the Southern region of the United States. Thus, the heart of dixie means, right in the heart of the South. Alabama is one of the top cotton producers in the USA, that’s why it is known as a cotton state. The yellowhammer is the state bird.
