Voltaire's Gardener is both serious and comical. First, it discusses living in an unproductive world with no hope for progress because people are too busy working on their gardens instead of doing anything productive like work or getting married; they're just "sprinkling some seeds here" (lines 2-3) which produces more weeds than vegetables since everything grows differently anyway!
