Overview

West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian, Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions of the United States. The state was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863 as 35th state. It is the 41st largest state by area and 38th most populous of all states. Charleston is the capital and largest city of the state including some other largest cities that Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg, Wheeling, Weirton etc.

West Virginia bordering states include Pennsylvania to the northeast, Maryland to the east and northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. West Virginia is nicknamed “The Mountain State” because of multiple mountains and rolling hills in the state. All of them are part of a huge mountain range called ‘The Appalachian Mountains’. So there are loads of recreational activities that one can enjoy in the state including skiing, white-water, rafting, fishing, hiking, camping, mountain biking, hunting and rock climbing. Besides, the climate of West Virginia is generally a humid subtropical climate with warm to hot, humid summers and chilly winters.

Some of the largest industries in the West Virginia economy are tourism, coal mining. The real Gross Domestic Product of the state in 2019 was 78.19 billion U.S. dollars.
