Carter Page III (Woody Harrelson), an escort for the wives of some of the most powerful men in Washington, D.C., is also their friend and confidant, and he entertains the ladies at weekly canasta games. When his closest friend, Lynn (Kristin Scott Thomas), discovers her lover stabbed to death, Carter offers to shield her from scandal by reporting the crime himself. He becomes a suspect and, aided by his lover (Moritz Bleibtreu), must turn amateur detective to protect Lynn and himself.
