Hughes County Historical Museum
Hughes County, created in 1907 from Creek and Choctaw lands, was named for William C. Hughes, a member of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention. Holdenville was founded in 1898 when 2 major railroads advanced westward into Indian Territory and intersected. New Holdenville Lake is impounded by Holdenville City Lake on a tributary of Little River in Hughes County, Oklahoma and is used for drinking water and recreation purposes. Wild Horse and Burro Adoptions
The Bureau of Land Management offers wild horses and burros for adoption throughout the year. The Pauls Valley Adoption Center hosts adoptions from 8 a.m. to noon the second Tuesday of every month at the facility, which is about a quarter mile west of Exit 74 on Interstate 35.
