On the heels of the sold-out premier of the Argosy Overture, Kyle Dillingham and Callen Clarke are launching a new symphonic work, “The Mary Rose”, a Fantasy-Overture for violin and orchestra set to premier with Dr. John Fletcher conducting the Oklahoma Community Orchestra on Tuesday, November 17th, 7:30pm at the Hardeman Auditorium on the campus of the Oklahoma Christian University.

Written by Edmond composer Callen Clarke and performed by world-renowned violinist Kyle Dillingham and the OCO, the Mary Rose premier will officially launch the Argosy Project, an initiative to revive Symphonic Music in America and the World through the creation and performance of exciting new orchestral repertoire. Prince Charles will be sending delegates from the Mary Rose Trust and the new Mary Rose Museum, currently under construction in the Portsmouth, England, to attend this world premier event. It has the full support of Governor Brad Henry, Lt. Governor Jari Askins and former Governor George Nigh.

A pre-concert Exhibition, starting at 6:45pm, will feature English-inspired food, a Mary Rose themed art exhibit, English Renaissance reenactments and booths from various local businesses displaying English-related wares, which will take participants back to 16th century England during the glory days of The Mary Rose. “The whole event will transport you back to the romance of Renaissance England,” Dillingham said. “It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience you don’t want to miss.”

Artifacts excavated from the famed ship will be on display, such as original coins and a replica of violin. A photographic story of The Mary Rose will be on display courtesy of The Mary Rose Trust and the University of Central Oklahoma, who is sponsoring the photo exhibition.

Mary Rose-themed art created by local artists will be on display as well, along with local actors and musicians performing from the era. “This 500-year celebration will involve all the senses, so be prepared to be moved,” said Dillingham. “If you liked the Titanic, you’re going to love The Mary Rose.”

The Mary Rose, legendary Renaissance warship laid down exactly 500 years ago by King Henry VIII, sank tragically in 1545 during the Battle of the Solent and was raised in 1982 by the Alexander McKee and the Mary Rose Trust, the only ship of its kind to be preserved. The music will feature themes and instruments from the era to vividly evoke the beautiful and violent world of Renaissance England.
