In Chinese brushwork painting, the plum blossom is considered one of the “Four Gentlemen” or “Four Scholarly Plants,” also representing the four seasons. These four plants are the Chinese orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom. The plum blossom blooms in late winter and represents that season as well as symbolizes courage under harsh conditions. Students in this workshop will learn to paint flowering plum blossom branches using ink and watercolor on rice paper.
