Reckless playboy Robert Merrick (Rock Hudson) is in a boat accident and his condition requires a resuscitator to save his life. Soon after, Dr. Phillips suffers a heart attack and requires the same resuscitator. Without it, Dr. Phillips dies, and his wife, Helen (Jane Wyman), is left penniless due to Phillips' generosity toward charities. Merrick then tries to right his wrongs with Helen, falls in love with her in the process and himself turns to studying medicine.
