Iron Starr Urban Barbeque -- a unique spin on traditional barbeque

By Paul Riedl

Iron Starr Urban Barbeque in Oklahoma City puts its own unique spin on traditional barbeque with menu items not seen every day.

For starters, the Mama’s Deviled Eggs appetizer is served with Oklahoma caviar — a mixture of black-eyed peas, red bell peppers, red onion, green onion and various spices.

Manager John Abston said that in addition to its slow-smoked St. Louis-cut ribs (rubbed with their secret dry spice and smoked in a hickory-pecan wood blend), the beef tenderloin wedge salad (a wedge of iceberg lettuce stuffed with bleu cheese and spiced pecan mixture, and served with a sliced tenderloin and bleu cheese-bacon vinaigrette) is one of the most popular items on the menu.

The fancy mac & cheese is also a can’t-miss menu item, Abston said. It is made with ziti noodles, Gruyere cheese and heavy cream.

If there’s room left after eating, Iron Starr has a lengthy dessert menu, including seven-layer chocolate cake and their homemade banana pudding.

There is also has a full bar with respectable wine and beer menus, including two from Coop Ale Works in Oklahoma City and two from the Choc Beer Company in Krebs.

For private parties and company events, Iron Starr has two banquet rooms that can be rented, Abston said. The larger room accommodates 100 people, while the smaller room can hold 40 people.

Iron Starr Urban Barbeque is at 3700 N Shartel, and is open for lunch Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and for dinner from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, 4 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 4 to 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Iron Starr is owned by A Good Egg Dining Group, which also owns Cheevers Cafe, Market-C, Red PrimeSteak and operates the restaurant at Pop's on Route 66 in Arcadia. A second Iron Starr location is set to open soon on Campus Corner in Norman.
