Hughes County, created in 1907 from Creek and Choctaw lands, was named for William C. Hughes, a member of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention.
Holdenville was founded in 1898 when 2 major railroads advanced westward into Indian Territory and intersected.
The Choctaw Coal and Railway Company (later Rock Island) and Frisco line facilitated migration. With the discovery of oil and gas in 1920s, a wealthy class emerged.
Attractions include the Hughes County Historical Society, Holdenville Historical Museum and the State Fish Hatchery. Holdenville Oklahoma and Hughes County are steeped in history, amenities and recreation.
