“Sharp Contrast,” an art opening featuring the work of Doris Bewley and Diana J. Smith (6.5 miles)

Takes place at Contemporary Art Gallery and happens every Thursday through Sunday

Join us for the opening reception May 4 from 6pm to 10pm. The exhibit will also feature works by other gallery artists and be on display through May 28, 2012. The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday from noon to 5 pm, Sunday from 1 to 4 pm, as well as Memorial Day weekend during the Paseo Arts Festival. The gallery is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

In recent works, both featured artists explore strong contrasting relationships of color and shape. Smith builds her silhouetted horse forms against a backdrop of intriguing collage elements, teasing the eye from one area to another. Bewley’s striking compositions of bold shapes and vivid colors suggest figures in various settings.

INSTRUCTOR: KELLI FOLSOM

With still life as the subject matter, this course will focus on painting in the chiaroscuro tradition by way of “alla prima,” or working wet into wet. The focus will be to achieve the maximum amount of depth and brilliancy of light, maintain rich color and achieve a sense of air in the paintings. Students will learn to utilize brush handling and paint quality to their advantage as they lay down the paint. A look at the masters of chiaroscuro painting, both past and present, will allow for discussions on compositional design, value control and color strategy. All levels welcome.

BEGINNING and ADVANCED students will learn the fundamentals of drawing, color theory, painting, sculpture and art history. We will draw from life in the tradition of classical realism. Direct observation and understanding of the subject are key elements of beginning as well as advanced drawing and painting. Through instructor demonstration, lecture, individual instruction and practice, students will learn the practical, step-by-step construction of the still life or landscape or portrait. Students will learn the methods and techniques of the great masters by making copies of paintings and drawings.

Students will be urged to take chances, seeing how far they can push the elements and develop strong decision making and objective analyzing of their painting. A look at the masters of chiaroscuro painting, both past and present will allow for discussions on effective design. Students will work on a new painting every two weeks. Concise group critiques will take place every two weeks.

Join us for the opening reception of "Outside the Lines" June 1 from 6 to 10pm. The exhibit will also feature works by other gallery artists and be on display through July 1, 2012. The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday from noon to 5 pm, Sunday from 1 to 4 pm, and is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

On canvases small and large, both artists build striking abstract compositions of dramatic shapes set off by distinctive lines and flamboyant color.

This course builds on the student’s previous knowledge of acrylic painting and will continue to explore materials and technical aspects of painting. Students will work from direct observation, exploring use of media through representational and abstract paintings. The process of painting, as well as composition (balance, unity, emphasis and manipulation of space) will be explored through the relative use of color, value, line, texture, opacity and shape. Objective and subjective color will be explored and discussed as will the formal and expressive potential of “surface.” Students will learn color mixing and experiment with various brushwork and knife techniques. Formal relationships will be stressed as a means of developing strong and expressive compositions, as well as representational form and space.
