Takes place at Contemporary Art Gallery and happens every Thursday through Sunday
Join us for the opening reception May 4 from 6pm to 10pm. The exhibit will also feature works by other gallery artists and be on display through May 28, 2012. The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday from noon to 5 pm, Sunday from 1 to 4 pm, as well as Memorial Day weekend during the Paseo Arts Festival. The gallery is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
In recent works, both featured artists explore strong contrasting relationships of color and shape. Smith builds her silhouetted horse forms against a backdrop of intriguing collage elements, teasing the eye from one area to another. Bewley’s striking compositions of bold shapes and vivid colors suggest figures in various settings.

Dramatic Still Life Painting
Saturday and Sunday, June 16 & 17 | 10am - 4 pm | $120
INSTRUCTOR: KELLI FOLSOM
With still life as the subject matter, this course will focus on painting in the chiaroscuro tradition by way of “alla prima,” or working wet into wet. The focus will be to achieve the maximum amount of depth and brilliancy of light, maintain rich color and achieve a sense of air in the paintings. Students will learn to utilize brush handling and paint quality to their advantage as they lay down the paint. A look at the masters of chiaroscuro painting, both past and present, will allow for discussions on compositional design, value control and color strategy. All levels welcome.

ALICIA PONZIO
Sculpting the Portrait
Wednesday - Sunday
July 25 - 29, 2012
$625 (supply fees additional and will be announced)
During this 5 day workshop, Alicia Ponzio, a Florence Academy trained sculptress, will guide students through the process of modeling a portrait from life in traditional water based clay, on a wooden armature. Using a specific 4-plane method of direct observation, students will learn to read and describe the structural elements of the portrait; and then explore the form, likeness, and expression of the individual sitter. The focus will be on improving observation skills and ability to work from life: practices that will lead to a more refined understanding of structure and form. Composition as it relates to portrait sculpture will also be discussed.
Each student will work on a life size portrait for the duration of the course. At the end of the course, the piece can be photographed, or students may opt to cast it or fire it themselves if they have access to those facilities.
Teaching methods will include brief lectures and discussions. Alicia will work alongside students, demonstrating key steps in the process and offering feedback to individual students during each class. Appropriate for all levels.
